- About VoIP: Sure, they don't have the addon architecture that Skype has recently moved up to with Skype 3.0 for WindowsBeta, but maybe that's coming - assuming I haven't somehow missedsomething on SightSpeed's website. Otherwise, if the ability to developaddons for Sightspeed appears in the next few releases, I think thatthey will become the primary disruptive force in the soft VoIP niche.(I vaguely recall something that one of the support staff told me a fewmonths back about the existence of an SDK or API or some such, but Ithink it's only available on a selective basis.) TechnoBabble: Skype has already been challenging broadband phone providers like Vonage, who offer free calls to several European countries along with voice mails, 911 emergency-dialing and free ATA (analog telephone adapter) device for a monthly fee of $24.99. But for $29.95 (or $14.95) for a full year, it’ll be interesting to see if Skype grabs more subscribers for their VoIP solution (even without e-911 service). (via Cosmos)
Towleroad: VoIP provider Skype done gave the world free unlimited calling earlier this year, but it was only ever meant to be temporary and now this year is about over. Still, the flat rate of $29.95 for a year of phone service is a pretty fair deal, and signing up before January cuts that in half for the first year. (via Cosmos)
Insinuations from Future: The news are easy to summarise: Skype, the company bought by eBay, whose main business is phone calls using the computer, thanks to the technology called VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) is launching a calling plan that will allow a person to phone unlimited times, unlimited minutes to any landline or mobile within USA and Canada, for a flat rate of $30per year. VoIP Sol - VoIP News and Information: A significant piece of information from the research was that 17% of the SMEs were prepared to work with a single provider for all their communication needs even if it were a slightly more expensive alternative than having more than one provider. What does that say to me? In order for internet telephony to go mainstream, providers must have a clearer and more consistent message in their marketing to inform decision makers on the benefits, other than cost, of switching to IP-based telephony as well as making the switch as easy as possible.
