Realtime: More than Just VoIP
[Signal to Noise] YouTube is proving something: Our industry, our great drive to IP convergence is connecting people in forms which are well beyond the traditional enterprise telephony and systems management disciplines the majority of us hailed from originally. Today, our best and brightest–Alec Saunders, Martin Geddes, Tom Evslin, Bruce Stewart, Andy Abramson, Tom Keating, and others–are shining the light on how humanity is achieving a form of social convergence that is enabled by the invisible network that exists between us.

Jajah bypassing mobile operators completely
[SMS Text News] Jajahs new mobile service suffers from none of the “detail issues” that I bring up in the post last week. I walk through how the new service works below, but the end result is that you can set your phone to use Jajah for certain types of calls (such as international calls) instead of your normal carrier.

VoIP Systems Subject To Security Risks?
[ - About VoIP] Now I'm not a VoIP securityexpert, but I can make an educated guess, based on my many years ofcomputer experience, that this guy, who goes by the pseudonym "TheGrugg", is grossly exaggerating the security issues, potentially to gain some attention. It's absurd to think that banks, who have been dealing with electronic security issues for severaldecades now, would even think to put their data and VoIP networks onthe same lines.

Delayed messages on Skype
[Signal to Noise] Andy bring’s up Skype’s most elusive I.M. problem: messages that show up days, even weeks after they’re intended to. I used to have this problem myself, and I believe Ken Camp have confirmed it as well. Of course, I don’t use Skype that much anymore, as I believe they’ve fallen behind Gizmo Project in many important areas.

Last tidbits from Boston
[Signal to Noise] When I go back to Cleveland, I’ll return to a non-profit, closed access fiber network instead of a private, commercialized network like the one described to me by an attendee from rural North Carolina. I’ll return to a local market that is frankly quite stunted, filled with large swaths of monopolistic regulated ILEC coverage, rather than an area where unbundling is commonplace.

[ Two Tacks Thoughts] Right now I have a triple-play package with Time Warner Cable - my pay tv, home phone, and internet service are with Time Warner. We also use Verizon for our cell service. Once DirecTV and Dish have WiMax we could have a Verizon FIOS offering, Time Warner Cable + Sprint Cell service, and DirecTV + Sprint all with four-play offerings in my area - Home Phone, Mobile Phone, Internet, and Pay TV. Or with mobile internet will it be five play? Does phone service even count at that point, or will it be just another layer on your internet service like e-mail or chat?
